What is MakingHistory?

I’m a historian, teacher, researcher, and writer. I have been a professor at a northern Minnesota university for the past seven years; but due to a budget crisis that career will be ending this year (2024) and I’ll be moving back to the Twin Cities to teach at a College in Saint Paul. This is my blog and the place I share work in progress. The blog is free and you can get access to all of the work in progress and read all my posts for the first month they’re “live”, without a paid subscription. But you can support me and the work with a paid subscription, so if you’re able and especially if you’re getting value from my content that you are using in your own work or life, please consider contributing. A paid subscription will also get you continuing access to my archive, which includes over a thousand posts from the last several years. Thanks!

Why subscribe?

Subscribe to get posts about what I’m working on. This is free and everyone can red all my content for the first month after I post it. There’s also an option to join a contributor community, which supports the work I put into this and will entitle you to continued access to all my content. This can be useful if you want to read everything I’ve posted on a particular topic over the past four years I’ve been on Substack.

Stay up-to-date

You won’t have to worry about missing anything. Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox. And you can even choose which topic “Sections” you want to hear about and which you don’t.

Join the community!

Be part of a community of people who share your interests. The paid subscription (which is only $5 per month or $50 annually) will give you access to all the stuff I’m working on, including books I’m writing in more-or-less realtime.

I typically have several projects running simultaneously, which I’ll subdivide into “Sections” listed in the header on my page. Things like Note-Making, Primary Sources, the Great Conversation, Open Ed, and Freethought which includes my biography of Dr. Charles Knowlton.

Videos!

In addition to writing little blog essays, I often turn these musings into audios or videos. I post some of those on YouTube and some on Vimeo. All will be available here, as part of the free membership when I post them and then in the archives on an ongoing basis.

So, welcome aboard!
