March 20, 1854: The Republican Party was formed in Ripon, Wisconsin, in a coalition between the anti-slavery Free-Soil Party and the Whigs, who stood for the use of government to support "internal improvements" and infrastructural investment.
March 21, 1918: The Second Battle of the Somme began with a five-hour German artillery attack. The battle, which would last until September, killed about a half million people.
March 22, 1622: The Powhatan Confederacy launches a surprise attack on Jamestown Virginia, killing 347 people and beginning the Second Powhatan War. This attack, led by Opechancanough, nearly wiped out the colony.
March 22, 1972: The Equal Rights Amendment to the US Constitution (ERA), which had been proposed to Congress in 1923, was passed by the Senate and sent to the states for ratification. Twenty-two states ratified the amendment, but it failed to achieve the needed 38 state approvals in the ten years allotted for ratification, receiving only 35 approvals.
March 23, 1933: The German legislature, the Reichstag, passed the Enabling Act that gave Adolf Hitler dictatorial powers and effectively launched the Nazi Third Reich.
