Mill's Autobiography, Part 4

My reading of the first half of Chapter 2 of John Stuart Mill’s Autobiography, in which he describes his father’s character. There’s a very nice definition of “Liberality” as “the weakening of the obstinate prejudice which makes men unable to see what is before their eyes because it is contrary to their expectations.” This section ends with Mill’s depiction of the type of liberality we need today. He says, “the forbearance which flows from a conscientious sense of the importance to mankind of the equal freedom of all opinions, is the only tolerance which is commendable, or, to the highest moral order of minds, possible.
